The following is an overview of the administrator side of a Joomla CMS website. The intent here is to give a quick orientation of what you will see when you login as administrator. More detail instructions on how to manage your site are elsewhere on this wiki.
To get to the page shown below, go to the following URL where you substitute your sites domain name for “yoursite”:
http://www.yoursite.com/administrator
The key is adding the /administrator to the end of your domain name.
Login with your username and password.
The top of the page will show the Joomla logo and your site name. On the right hand side of the header you can find the version of Joomla installed. You should check this from time to time to make sure you have the most recent version installed. It is important to make sure any security updates are installed.
The next row in the window has standard drop down menus that allow you to reach all of the administration sections of your site. You can also reach many areas by clicking on the icons (see next section). Like many software applications, there is more than one way to reach most areas. However, there are some items in the menu that cannot be reached from icons.
To the right of the menus are some small icons and information. From left to right they are:
Preview: clicking this link opens a new window showing the front end of your site so you can see the effect of any changes you have made.
A message icon followed by a number indicating the number of internal messages you have received. Clicking on this will take you to your messages.
A user icon showing the number of people using the site.
A link to Logout.
The large area below the menus (left side of screen) contains icons for the major items you might want to control as an administrator. This is the default screen when you log into the site. It can also be reached from the Site > Control Panel menu selection.
To the right of the control panel icons are boxes showing various information about your site. These include:
Logged in Users
Popular : Shows the number of hits each of your pages has received.
Recent added Articles: Shows the articles, dates and who created them.
